WHAT IS CAMP CADRE? Camp Cadre will be a week long buffet-style series of trainings and classes to equip you to be the best Socialist organizer you can be, followed later in the month of February by a week of putting what you’ve learning into action.
WHAT IS A CADRE? Cadre is the word Socialists and others use to describe their dedicated members and devoted organizers. The root of the word comes from a word that describes the part of the picture frame that holds up the picture. If cadre are doing their job, you don’t even notice them.
Those who attend four workshop slots throughout the week will receive an Official Camp Cadre 2017 Graduate certificate!
Camp Cadre Night 1: Foundations of Socialist Politics Janurary 30, 7-8:45pm
Slot 1 7:00 pm – 7:45 pm — Who is KWL, what do we do, and why?

Slot 2 8:00pm – 8:45 pm — Socialist Strategy 101: Dual Power
The 1% have their strategies for maintaining control over society. What strategy can the 99% use to build our own power from below? Will Emmons will give a brief introduction to the Socialist Strategy of Dual Power. Questions and discussion encouraged.
Camp Cadre Night 2: Foundations of Organizing Janurary 31, 7-8:45pm
Slot 1 7:00 pm – 7:45 pm — Organizing 101: The Art of the One-on-One
The fundamental link between an organizer and the masses is the one-on-one conversation. Join organizer Greg Capillo to learn the secrets of the Art of the One-on-One.
Slot 2 8:00pm — 8:45 pm — Running Effective Meetings
Meetings are the lifeblood of any democratic organization, but too often they are directionless, intimidating, and take longer than they need to. Join Joe Hamilton for a jam session on how organizers can make meetings effective, efficient, and inclusive.
Camp Cadre Night 3: Fight the Power, Serve the People Feburary 1, 7-8:45pm
Note: Each workshop slot will be hosted simultaneously from 7:00-7:45 and again from 8:00-8:45, meaning you can pick two of the four in whichever order you prefer.
Slot A — Non-Violent Direct Action 101
Sometimes the most effective tactic for fighting the powers that be is putting our bodies on the line. Join Greg Capillo to learn how to do this safely and effectively. Join us on Thursday Feb 2 for the follow up workshop on Keeping the Peace.
Slot B — Pre-Gaming: How to Table
KWL believes in organizing the unorganized. One place to meet unorganized people is at festivals and events. Join Megan Murph and Meg Brown for a conversation about what needs to happen to bring your A game to tabling.
Slot C — Tutoring and After School Programs
Join Anna Campomanes for a conversation about KWL’s work with youth in Cardinal Valley and how you can get involved.
Slot D — Seize the Means of Communication: Power to the People radio
KWL produces a monthly radio show on WLXU. Come learn the craft of this and how to get involved.
Camp Cadre Night 4: Managing Conflicts, Managing Ourselves Feburary 2, 7-9:15pm
Note: Each workshop slot will be hosted simultaneously from 7:00-7:45 and again from 8:00-8:45, meaning you can pick two of the three in whichever order you prefer followed by a winding-down exercise from 8:45-9:15.
Slot A — Keeping the Peace: Deescalation in Tense Situations
Following up with the Non-Violent Direct Action 101 that we’re offering on Wednesday, Feb 1, join Greg Capillo for a conversation on how to deal with cops and right-wing bullies when they show up at protests.
Slot B – Revolutionary Wellness
Organizing is hard work. Most of us do this for free, and the bad guys’ forces are larger than ours and better-resourced. Moreover, we often find ourselves in conflicts with other activists who seem to share our values. It all takes an emotional toll. Join Megan Murph and Anna Campomanes for a conversation about best practices for staying well.
Slot C – Arbitration: Handling Contradictions Among the People
In any human organization, conflicts arise. People have differences of opinion and people have personality conflicts. Sometimes these two things get intertwined. In this workshop, we will be discussing how KWL seeks to manage conflicts among our members so we can save our fire for the real bad guys.
Wind Down Exercise 8:45 pm – 9:15 pm – Socialist Yoga
Following an evening of intense Socialist learning, join Megan Murph, revolutionary and certified Yoga instructor, for brief Yoga exercises with comrades.
Camp Cadre Night 5: Potluck and Graduation Feburary 3, 7:30-9:00pm
Celebrate a successful week of trainings with food and fellowship. Comrades who have completed at least 4 Camp Cadre workshops will receive an Official Camp Cadre Winter 2017 graduate certificate. We will also be discussing how to get plugged into The Camp Cadre Service Learning Projects to take place the week of Thursday Feb 16 through Wednesday Feb 22.
